About Jan Peters & Reverse Painting
Welcome to the vibrant world of Jan Peters, a talented artist whose unique vision and creativity inspire viewers across the globe. Jan's work is a captivating blend of bold colours and intricate details, reflecting a deep appreciation for both nature and the human experience.
Jan has revived the heritage art of reverse painting on glass as used by the Russian icon painters and experimented with by some recent artists such as Kandinsky. Jan has given her own modern twist to this art to create paintings full of life and with her own modernistic ways to frame and present such art. As you explore her art, you'll discover the passion and creativity, inviting you to experience the beauty and emotion contained within each piece. We invite you to join us in celebrating Jan Peters' artistic journey.
What is reverse glass painting?
The artist begins with the foreground details like highlights and the finest lines (imagine eye lashes painted before the face is)
Then the artist builds up the image by layering colours with the background painting last
the final image is viewed through the glass which acts as a protective layer and enhances the vibrancy of colours
Why its unique and what are its advantages to me?
Its difficult! No piece can ever be exactly replicated with prints etc so the painting is entirely unique, exclusive and cant be seen elsewhere.
The glass acts as a barrier making colours appear more intense and giving the painting unusual sense of depth.
The painting is protected from dust, scratches and other damage by the glass Jan Peters uses UV protected shatter proof light acrylic glass, so her paintings can, (unlike canvas art), be hung in more humid or sunny areas.
Modern acrylic glass has similar and in some cases better optical clarity than heavier and more fragile glass and is easier to hang.
Historical Significance?
Reverse painting has been practiced for centuries. However framing and presentation has proved difficult. Kandinsky used to stand up the glass paintings against black carboard to show them.
Jan Peters has pioneered unique contemporary presentation of the unusual art so it can be easily hung and carries on reinforcing and complimenting this enchanting heritage art.
